For me, the problem was actually in efibootmgr not creating the efi boot
entry. No clue why.

Using boot-repair from a ubuntu 13.10 live usb did work, and now the 
installed-on-computer
version of efibootmgr also works again.

My computer is multi-boot, and I updated windows 8 -> 8.1 the day before; that 
might have
played a role (it also set windows to be the 1st EFI boot option, without my 
aksing).
