I installed the recent Linux Mint and the recent Xubuntu 13.10, I'm
running 3.11.0-15-generic on a netbook and this problem still exists!

I have no experience with compiling a new Kernel or anything like that.

I can temporarily fix the problem with the commands
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse

or

sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps

both fixes the touchpad for a while (even though the scroll function on
the side of the touchpad never works) but then it happens again. The
mouse still moves but no clicks are recognized.

If I remove the module and use an external mouse, the mouse is reliable.
