hm. an annoyingly simple problem with an overly-technical non-user friendly response? sounds like ubuntu to me! none of your suggested action will happen because I don't use Ubuntu any more. as I recall, the crash was too severe to even send a bug report. hopefully it's changed! I wouldn't know.
