asgard2, thank you for testing Trusty. For now, I'm going to send this
to xorg for review, as this would appear to be an issue there, versus
the kernel.

Despite this, regarding the information you provided:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ xrandr --output HDMI-1-1 --auto
Floating point exception (core dumped)

If your OS is not in too bad of a shape, a window should pop open to allow you 
the opportunity to report a bug. If not, this should populate a crash file in 
the folder /var/crash , where it is recommended this is copied to your 
installed OS, and report from there via:
ubuntu-bug NAMEOFCRASHFILE

Just to clarify, in the best scenario from all the xrandr permutations
tested, while the external monitor was working via HDMI in Trusty, the
FPS was 1-3, and you would have graphics artifacts?
