Public bug reported:
With the integrated Intel ICH5 AC97 6-channel sound card (snd_intel8x0
driver) Feisty only detects a very low static sound from the microphone
input jack, regardless of whether my microphone is plugged in or not.
The microphone works in Windows XP, so I know the microphone and card
work. Also note that I have tried muting all other inputs except the
microphone, tried different jacks, and different microphone selection
settings. All of these produce the same result.
Recording with this card and microphone works perfectly in KNOPPIX 5.1
(which uses alsa 1.0.13) and in Edgy. I also tried Gutsy Tribe 4, which
exhibits the same symptoms as Feisty. I should also mention that
recording works on another computer with a VIA chip that runs Feisty
amd64. (My computer is 32-bit.)
I have tried a number of different things to diagnose this problem,
including compiling my own custom 2.6.22.3 kernel from kernel.org
sources, and compiling alsa 1.0.14 from upstream, installing the base,
lib, utils, driver (passing --with-cards=intel8x0 to configure,) and
tools packages. Neither of these changed the situation, but upgrading
alsa seems to have broken recording, as I now only hear silence from
recordings, but I still hear the static coming from my speakers if I
unmute the microphone for playback. Before the upgrade I could hear
static from my speakers and record it as well.
Also note that aside from the experiments outlined above, I have not
changed any alsa configuration files. I do not have /etc/asound.conf or
an ~/.asoundrc file on my computer. Also, playback works fine, and the
card is detected with no apparent errors. See attached dmesg and lspci
output.
