Public bug reported:

I helped a user set up his Toshiba Satellite Pro N10 during FOSDEM (so I
cannot easily do further tests).

Default installation of saucy from USB media, after reboot, screen turns
purple for five seconds, then black (backlight off). No logo is shown on
purple background.

Forums suggest that backlight control and kernel mode switching on this
hardware do not work together well. Disabling kernel mode switch and
removing "quiet" and "splash" options shows normal boot, but X refuses
to start (Screens present but no usable configuration).

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
