Thanks for your interest, Christopher M. Penalver. Original bug was reported on a Dell Dimension E520. This machine has been moved and has no longer access to a second monitor. The test with trusty was done with a laptop Toshiba Satellite A665.
I'm afraid I've been mainly using LTS versions. I can only say that it worked well on 10.04, but it doesn't in 12.04. Does the bug regarding saving the X config file has been reported?
