Public bug reported:

Description: Ubuntu 13.10
Release: 13.10
xfwm4:
  Installed: 4.10.1-2ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4.10.1-2ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4.10.1-2ubuntu1 0
        500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ saucy/universe amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

This is the "Studio" flavor of Saucy Salamander, with Xfce desktop.

I encountered this bug while trying to implement a workaround for a
persistent return-from-standby graphics problem. Since logging out,
then in again, would solve the problem (screen turned to gibberish), and
xscreensaver & certain other applications often displayed fine even when
the desktop was corrupted, I decided to try going through the window
manager. The command I issued (via tty1) was :

xfwm4 --display :0.0 --replace

The error messages received were :

Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/50-user.conf", line 14: reading
configurations from ~/.fonts.conf is deprecated.
(xfwm4:3418): xfwm4-CRITICAL **: Xfconf could not be initialized
(xfwm4:3418): xfwm4-WARNING **: Missing data from default files

The "Fontconfig warning" is something I get constantly (even
xscreensaver issues it), so I don't know whether it's relevant or even
meaningful, but I included it for the sake of completeness.

The observed condition was that, after issuing this command, the
desktop was no longer gibberish, but all the application windows were
blank (ie, borders rendered but no content).

** Affects: xfwm4 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
