Yepp, that time line sounds about right to me too.

Given that gnome-terminal 3.6.2-0ubuntu1 is from the 16th of December I
would assume then that the issue is due to some gnome/unity change.

Also, when running gnome-terminal under Xfce the "Enable menu access
keys (such as Alt+F to open the File menu)" setting still works as
expected.
