Christopher, I'm sorry for the long delay in my answer. The solution I found wasn't a solution at all because I couldn't shutdown properly the computer ever since so I didn't file the report you asked for. I recently switched to the KDE desktop and yesterday I accidentally clicked to shutdown instead of leaving the session. Well, it switched off and it stayed off. I'll try it again as soon as I can (I must work now) and see if I can get it to shutdown consistently. Then I'll be back to you. KDE fixed another bug for me (1266005) so maybe there is something different in the way it interfaces the hardware. I was using Gnome fallback mode before. My kernel is 3.11.0-17-generic #31~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 4 21:25:43 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux It's 12.04 LTS with the hardware enablement stack
