Not sure it's an upstream bug - if you read back, there used to be Debian-specific code wrapped in an #ifdef, which depends on a preprocessor symbol that is no longer defined .. if you've got time you could see if the seem problem ever existed in Debian, and if so, if/how they fixed it ..
