I can confirm that we can not install nagios2 on Edgy.
Your analysis is not exact. nagios2-common depends on nagios-plugins-basic, but
this package in the version that is provided in Edgy does not come with
"check_ping" command defined and it failed to start nagios:
"Error: Service check command 'check_ping' specified in service 'PING' for host
'gateway' not defined anywhere!"
We should probabily update it.
