Problem solved, Tribe 5 gets it right for IBM Thinkpad R31: driver i810, 1024x768, depth 24.
Not only that, the touchy screen appears fixed too. A patch is required on Feisty to fix the super sensitive think point (mouse) which can erroneously signal multiple shutdowns and other craziness when the mouse gets close to a border.
