Sometimes one have to reinstall the mesa packages after having used the
"Restricted" (proprietary) fglrx drivers. Please try: sudo apt-get
install -reinstall libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx

If that doesn't help, try disabling DRI by adding to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Module"
  Disable "dri"
EndSection
