For what it's worth, I tried running the GetInstance.java test program on a Trusty sandbox machine, and it completed successfully. This was with openjdk-7-jdk package version 7u51-2.4.5-1ubuntu1. (Based on http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/2col/7u40-bugfixes-2007733.html , it seems that Oracle bug 8017173 was fixed in the upstream 7u40 release.)
