For people that are affected by this issue, some things that you might try to get your system back in shape:
A) sudo apt-get install --reinstall ttf-mscorefonts-installer B) sudo apt-get remove --purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer; sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer C) sudo dpkg-reconfigure ttf-mscorefonts-installer This is an either or list. If one of them fixes the problem for you, don't try the others :).
