I'm pressing "Cancel" until eternity and get the same popup on the
screen over and over again.

In addition I cannot follow the instruction on the popup: "Enter the
passcode on the device and click 'Try again'" because the device in
question (iPhone 4S) does not prompt me for a password.

Also, if I press "Trust" when the iPhone asks whether I trust this
computer, I get the same popup "Do you trust this computer" over and
over again. Only selection that makes sense is "Don't trust", alas.

I do not know whether this is a kernel or GUI problem, but there still
is a problem. So, I add the tag:

'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.
