Thanks a lot for clearing out this issue! I think it could be included
in a wiki or elsewhere since it demonstrates how PPA may ruin a system
absolutely unexpectedly at a random time in future.

I did run 
$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:webupd8team/gvfs-libmtp
and then
$ sudo gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders --update-cache
and everything got back to its normal state!
