Both ubuntu-minimal and system-services are installed.

I'll try to narrow down a bit more this weekend.

You'll be pleased to know that "break" is doing the right thing. =P
What's the current equivalent of "udevstart", btw?  I remember it was
something with a series of switches, and I'm wonrdering if it's not
worth providing "udevstart" or something like that as a two line shell
script to make remembering it easier (along with perhaps a 10 line
README file that talks a bit about how to get to your root filesystem
from this point)
