At some point on or around 2014-03-13 or 2014-03-14 some package
dependencies became unstable, resulting in the metapackage "unity-
desktop" no longer having its dependencies met and getting automatically
removed from users systems during an upgrade. These package dependency
problems have since been resolved.
It sounds like this is the problem you have encountered, in which case
explicitly installing the unity-desktop package should fix the
situation. Could you please try this and let us know if it solves the
problem?
