I managed to install 14.04 by creating a separate /boot partition. I
still got the error message that grub-efi-amd64-signed failed to
install; but opening gparted before closing the installer, I notcied the
/boot had about 150 MB on it.

The system EFI boot menu does not show any entry for 14.04, but I
managed to boot 14.04 by running update-grub from a Debian install.

Synapatic shows grub2-common as installed; but in addition to not
booting normally, there are obvious problems with the system from
failure to have the installer shutdown properly: ubiquity is still
installed and shows on the launcher, apt-get install gparted fails
because the apt thinks it is still installed, etc.
