I think the issue here isn't really:
   "How do I install php-foo on *my* server?",
but:
  "why aren't these packages provided by default?"

I know I can work around this bug, but what should be done to get it fixed 
upstream for all the other millions of Ubuntu users? 
Is this a matter of policy, or lack of resources, or is more than a trivial 
change to the packaging required? It "just works" in SuSE and Mandriva.
