This issue isn't solved until now. Seeing it with two servers here (since these
are seldom accessed from console mostly by ssh -- this isn't that bad, as long
as they are running ...) and VMware Workstation 10/ESXi 5.5/VirtualBox 4
At least VirtualBox should be easily testable (a little bit harder: VMware
Player/Workstation/ESXi bit not impossible). As soon as you switch to a higher
resolution than 640x480 the console will not show anything after printing
kernel boot lines up to the moment it switches to higher resolution. For
systems not even capable displaying 640x480 resolutions you'll never see
anything printed on screen except grub's menu. Since grub clears the screen
before handling control to the kernel, only a blinking cursor remains.
