I have a DELL Latitude D800 (Model PP02X), and I get the exact same problem. It goes to sleep properly, but when I press the power button, I see the HD lights blink and it turns on but the screen remains blank. I know that everything is running properly in the background because if I press CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE, then it returns be back to the login screen. I know this because I recognize the sound that is played when I type in the incorrect password. Pressing FCN-Suspend will also cause it to go back into sleep mode. I can't restore the display for the life of me unless i do a hard reboot. I am running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn.
