I have now installed the latest "64-bit Mac (AMD64) desktop image" from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ so I am now running "Ubuntu 14.04 LTS". Unfortunately the problem has not been solved. After suspend and resume the display is still broken.
