Public bug reported:

This is a bug with a dual-boot installation of Ubuntu Fiesty and Windows
XP Pro.

I am reporting this as a bug because no one seems to take it as such. I
have seen multiple complaints about this same issue, with never a
response or solution in the Ubuntu (and other) forums. I think many
people just report "my sound doesn't work", meaning at all, or implying
there is a problem with the driver, but I don't think that is the
hangup.

Reproducing Bug: Make a dual-boot system with Windows Xp Pro and Ubuntu
Fiesty Fawn. Load Ubuntu and ensure sound is working properly. Restart
from the logoff menu and load Windows, and ensure sound is working
properly. Restart from the Windows logoff menu and choose Ubuntu from
Grub. Sound will no longer work in Ubuntu. Restart from the logoff
menu and select Windows in Grub. Sound will work. Shut down the
computer from the windows logoff menu and wait a few minutes. Turn
power on and load Ubuntu. Sound now works.

I'm not sure of the correct terminology but it seems that Windows
doesn't "release" the sound card unless the system is coldbooted. A
soft restart into Ubuntu from Windows will result in no sound working in
Ubuntu, although obviously it will work fine with a soft restart into
Windows from Windows or Ubuntu.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
