Actually, both are unreliable for me, but in different ways. Sleep/s3: sometimes the machine fails to suspend (freezes before it can power down). If suspend succeeds, then resume always works. That's this bug report. [Hibernate/s4: sometimes thaw/resume after boot results in black screen and hang.
