After the preceding dialog was displayed another error dialog appears a
few seconds later that there was a problem installing (removing?)
gparted. Unfortunately I did not write down the error message.

No further errors occurred during the installation procedure.

Upon restart, however, I got the following error from the command-line early in 
the boot sequence:
> kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

This error is fatal; Ubuntu fails to start up.
