Public bug reported:
I am attempting to clean install Gutsy Tribe 5 on a MacBook Pro, Rev.A,
Core Duo with a Radeon Mobility X1600. There are several problems
starting X on this machine with "gutsy-desktop-i386.iso".
This bug relates to the initial start up of X for the live CD desktop.
I have filed as a new bug because the existing gutsy fglrx bugs don't
seem to be manifesting in the live CD, just a feisty->gutsy upgrade, and
they all seem to have been fixed well before Tribe 5.
GDM fails to start X. The ATI fglrx drivers are not loaded for the
video card, and Xorg fails to find any displays using the vesa driver.
The Xorg log enumerates dozens of display modes, however the last line
in the log indicates "No display modes found."
After viewing the GDM errors, the display didn't switch to the console,
it remained on a black screen. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+(Fn+F1) opens the
console as expected.
I then attempted to "sudo restricted-manager --enable=fglrx" which
segfaulted.
"sudo aptitude install xorg-drivers-fglrx" installed the drivers and gcc
3.3 base, but running "dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" caused the
display to go black as soon as fglrx I selected fglrx.
I am unable to use the computer after the display stops, so I'm not sure
how to get logs for this crash.
I will re-attempt installation shortly with the alternate CD.
