I've been installing things since this morning, so I'm not sure about
the other packages for which it didn't work. The last ones I
remember are xarchive (I tried to mark rpm and p7zip) and xarchiver
(I tried to mark rar).

A few minutes ago, I tried the same with file-roller (i.e., marking
the recommended: sharutils, lzop, mkisofs, ncompress; and the
suggested: lha) and it doesn't work. So it seems to me that the
problem is synaptic itself.
