thanks for the response.

Did 'sudo chmod 700 /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel' and it had no effect.
Did 'sudo chmod 777 /usr/lib/cups/backend/parallel' and the Ubuntu Cups works 
perfectly.

I have one printer with USB that works fine.
I have one parallel printer which now works fine thanks to changing the CUPS 
backend parallel file to 777 instead of the default 755.
Loathe to get rid of a perfectly good working printer just because of a 
permissions issue.
I'm happy now.
