I think it is a mistake to require sign-in just to *check* for updates.
That might lead to you going to the trouble of signing in (or even
registering an Ubuntu One account), only to see that no updates are
available. Signing in to *install* updates would be much more palatable.

Meanwhile, though, I've updated the spec assuming that sign-in is
necessary to check for updates.
