If you're using intel video card do:
sudo gedit /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Add the following in the empty file then log out and log in again or
reboot. That should fix your problem.
Section "Device"
Identifier "card0"
Driver "intel"
Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection
