The reason the reinstall didn't fix the issue is because I have the
/home folder on a separate partition and upon logging in for the first
time, Unity was reading the hidden files in the user's home directory.
Apparently, after the final release, there were some previously created
(during the beta) configuration files that Unity no longer understood
after release day.

I fixed the problem by deleting all hidden files and folders from the
user's home directory (using the Live DVD), and (although probably not
necessary) I reinstalled Ubuntu 14.04 after this.
