Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: synaptic

This bug concerns the pre-installed Ubuntu 7.04 on the Dell 1420 laptop:
sudo apt-cdrom add cannot mount the CD_ROM (ditto for synaptic). There
is a known fix (see below)- the reason I'm reporting it is because it
occurs on the *pre-installed* Ubuntu. The consequence is that the user
can't install more packages from the Ubuntu CD "out of the box" (like
build-essential, which is needed for gcc to find the standard include
files). Instead he has to perform some sysadmin functions that are
likely beyond the technical competence of many users- it was for me
anyway.

Anyway, here's the relevent configuration out of the box:
In / we have:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2007-08-25 01:15 cdrom -> media/cdrom

In /media we have:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2007-08-25 01:16 cdrom -> cdrom0
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 2007-06-21 07:12 cdrom0
dr-xr-xr-x 13 ben root 4096 2007-04-15 06:52 Ubuntu 7.04 i386

(The last entry there is the actual CD.)

mount shows:
/dev/hda on /media/Ubuntu 7.04 i386 type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,uid=1000,utf

in /etc/fstab we have:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

The solution (one of many probably) is to change the entry in /etc/fstab
from /dev/scd0 to /dev/hda

I'm new around here, so I don't know all the issues involved, but
shouldn't we be able to insure that in the pre-installed Ubuntu on Dell,
synaptic and apt-cdrom work without any problem? Is this an issue for
Ubuntu or for the Dell installation of it?
