I was able to upgrade in a haphazard way after deleting a large chunk of files implicated in dependencies. After an unpleasant couple of days adding back what I inadvertently deleted, ubuntu 14.04 seems to be mostly working. Thank you for the information about ppa-purge. I hope to avoid this next upgrade.
