It seems like the samba-related packages were the culprit, after purging them the upgrade went fine. Attaching an excerpt from /var/log/apt/history.log, which lists the packages I had to purge in order for the upgrade to go through.
Nevertheless, I am keeping this bug report open, as these were standard packages and should have been handled gracefully by the updater. I would be glad to provide more information if someone is interested. ** Attachment added: "Apt log listing problematic purged packages" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1309670/+attachment/4093104/+files/apt_history.log ** Summary changed: - Error upgrading Saucy to Trusty + Samba packages cause error when upgrading Saucy to Trusty ** Description changed: After starting an upgrade from Saucy to Trusty via the update-manager GUI, a dialog box was shown with the following information. + + UPDATE: Problem was resolved after purging several Samba-related + packages, apt/history.log attached.
