Do those vertical lines appear outside of that specific installation of
Ubuntu (live CD, windows, other linux partition, etc)?
My graphics card sometimes produces this style video error too.
Reseating the video card (snap the card out and put it back in with the
PC powered off and disconnected) fixes the problem I have.
