Yes, that's true. I am also now using version 8.40.4. So try to install
latest drivers available from ATI. A good step-by-step description how
to do so is located at ubuntu.com (direct link:
http://tinyurl.com/39kpsy). I also had the same problems with my PCI-e
X600: Starting eg. OO just showed me the splash screen for half a second
and then it just closed /wo any error-msg. Now with my 'selfmade' fglrx
drivers everything runs just fine. It's really worth taking some minutes
to compile your own *.deb's ;)
