I installed the 3.14.1-trusty kernel from the Ubuntu Mainline Kernels repository, and that seems to have fixed it for me. I have an Intel Mobile 965GM and Core 2 Duo processor. When using the 3.13 kernel that ships by default, adding "nomodeset" to my GRUB configuration was the only way to fix the suspend/resume issue.
