I have tried to install linux-image-3.15.0-031500rc3-generic following this guide: http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-kernel-3-15-rc-3-on-ubuntu- linux-mint-and-their-derivative-systems/ and I don't see the "[drm:intel_dp_i2c_aux_ch] *ERROR* too many retries, giving up" messages anymore, however the stability issue persists. If I try to run xrandr while the external DP monitor is in use, it either immediately reverts to the laptop screen or it crashes the system. In the case it did not crash the system, but rather reverted to the laptop screen, the following output was found in dmesg:
