I don't know if some back story will help, but more details are better,
right? :)

This computer is quite old but it was regulary used with ubuntu version
up to around 11.04.

Then this computer got a bit ignored due to real life ;)

Then I wanted to breathe new life into this machine and use it as a
backup server.

This computer is sported a radeon hd2900xt previously, but after
upgrading to ubuntu 13.10 the card was no longer supported with the
properitary drivers and the open source ones were lacking other
features.

So I stuck an nvidia gtx 9800 I got from a friend in it instead.

This card has however not been used before in ubuntu so I'm not sure how
well i fares with older ubuntus. I know for certain that ubuntu 13.10
experienced this same issue though.
