I confirm Brian Burch's comment above about step-wise upgrades since 8.04. I do recall being "encouraged" to upgrade to grub2 but I had some peculiar config that made that risky. Of course, I don't recall what the risks were... Attached is the new grub.cfg created after running grub- mkconfig. Next I'll attach the console output produced.
