I was also experiencing this problem. After some googling I found a thread that specifies this to be an Nuvou drivers issue (or rather missing Nvidia drivers). To correct the problem install the nvidia drivers. You can do this on the login screen press ctrl+alt+F2, which will bring you to a TTY interface. Login there and issue sudo apt-get install nvidia-current sudu reboot (or hard rebot as I had to do one).
Once you restart the issue should be mitigated. However, the problem with the drivers should still be investigated. I am not sure what logs I can provide but I have taken a snapshot of all of them. I am attaching the faulty Xorg logs ** Attachment added: "Xorg with Nuvou driver failure" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-meta/+bug/1313402/+attachment/4102019/+files/Xorg.0.log.old ** Package changed: xubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) => xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1313402 Title: Ubuntu 14.04 freezes on login To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/1313402/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
