I was also experiencing this problem. After some googling I found a thread that 
specifies this to be an Nuvou drivers issue (or rather missing Nvidia drivers). 
To correct the problem install the nvidia drivers. You can do this on the login 
screen press ctrl+alt+F2, which will bring you to a TTY interface. Login there 
and issue
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudu reboot (or hard rebot as I had to do one).

Once you restart the issue should be mitigated. However, the problem
with the drivers should still be investigated. I am not sure what logs I
can provide but I have taken a snapshot of all of them. I am attaching
the faulty Xorg logs
