I suspect that too as I already mentioned I can suspend/resume before a
Unity/compiz session is actually started. With only a lightdm running it
just works. You trying out a GNOME session just confirms it.

However, it still means there's a bug in the kernel since a piece of
third-party software can cause a kernel panic. This is what they say on
the freedesktop.org bugzilla.
