A clue that I can offer. This is a VERY common problem and arises with
Intel chips especially when compiz* is around.

With 90% of video files, adding to xorg.conf:
Option "VideoRam" "65536"
Option "CacheLines" "1980"
will stop the crashes for at least GMA950. Some are more persistent and would 
need something like:
Option "LinearAlloc" "16000" 
but it conflicts with compiz-fusion and all the blingbling.
