Running ubuntu 14.04 LTS with lightdm 1.10.0-0ubuntu3
The system is configured to use NIS so has:
passwd: files nis
group: files nis
shadow: files nis
in /etc/nsswitch.conf.
A NIS user can log in on a virtual console (tty1 etc.) but trying
to log in under lightdm fails, with the following in dmesg:
