Ok. So the next bit is going to be slightly awkward, I'm afraid. First
of all, download

http://www.codon.org.uk/~mjg59/tmp/x86_debug/libx86-1_0.99-1.2debug1_amd64.deb

and install it. Switch to a console and mount your filesystem
synchronously (I'm going to assume you have a single filesystem here -
if you have a separate home directory, use /home rather than /):

mount -o sync,remount /

and then do

sudo vbetool vbemode set 0x118 >vbetrace

Once the machine has hung, try doing alt+sysrq+s (just to be on the safe
side) and then reboot. gzip the vbetrace file and attach it here.
