The redhat bugzilla entry mentioned in my original report says it's fixed in a
newer kernel:
"kernel-3.9.6-200.fc18.x86_64 - affected
kernel-3.9.8-300.fc19.x86_64 - not affected"
I judge it very unlikely that an additional ios update would make a difference,
and there doesn't seem to be any supported
way in Ubuntu to do the BIOS update.
