It seems that ppce500 is not a valid host arch for vmbuilder.
Please reference to the following codes in
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/VMBuilder/distro.py:

valid_archs = { 'amd64' : ['amd64', 'i386', 'lpia' ],
